Living the Dream

Pumpkin carving is one of our traditions that we do some years, and we skip some years. Last year, we moved into our house the weekend of October 1st, so it was a hectic time of year. There are some things - like visiting the pumpkin patch - that I'm not willing to skip, so we squeezed it in. Pumpkin carving, though? I'm not overly attached to it, so we just didn't do it.

This year, we had planned to carve our pumpkins on the evening that we celebrated Chris's birthday, which was October 30th. However, it was a school night, and by the time we had dinner, cake, and presents we just ran out of time. I was kind of thinking that we'd just skip pumpkin carving again this year, but the kids kept asking about it. It feels kind of wrong to me to carve pumpkins after Halloween, but that's what we ended up doing! It's amazing how flexible I've become since having kids, lol.

Halloween was on Tuesday this year, and we set aside the following Thursday for the pumpkin carving. So we were only a few days late :-). The evening was beautiful and warm (you'll notice that the girls are wearing shorts in these photos!), so we decided to also do s'mores in our fire pit that evening.

This photo makes me smile! The kids' faces were priceless when Daddy pulled the top off the pumpkin!

Pumpkin goop!

Brenson has never liked putting his hands in a pumpkin. This year was no exception.

The little girls have never really done this activity before, so this was all new to them. Brooke had no problem digging right in!

In typical Brecklyn fashion, she was timid about putting her hand in the pumpkin. Daddy had to help her be brave.

While Daddy worked on cleaning the goop out of our pumpkin, the kids and I separated the seeds into a bowl of their own. We all love roasted pumpkin seeds!

The children were eager to get the pumpkin cleaned out and to choose a design to carve into the pumpkin, but pretty much as soon as Daddy began the carving process, they all ran off. Kids :-). They could see the fire in the fire pit, and they couldn't resist it!

Poor Daddy was abandoned to carve the pumpkin by himself :-(. Brooke would go back and check on him every now and then, but he was pretty much on his own. This is also why we only carved one pumpkin instead of two like we'd originally planned!

It didn't take Daddy long to finish our pumpkin and light it up. Didn't he do such a good job?!?

We spent the rest of the evening down by the fire laughing, visiting, and roasting marshmallows. It was such a gorgeous evening, and there's just something about a crackling fire and gooey treats that bring out the best in everyone. There are some moments that make my heart so full that I become overwhelmed with gratitude for my babies. I can't help but think that THIS was my dream, and here I am living it. 💓
