She Thinks We're Just Fishin'

A few weeks ago, Chris and I took the kids out to his family land to visit his grandparents. We had a really great visit, and always cherish these times watching our kiddos interact with their great-grandparents!

The kids love walking around on the land and exploring. There is lots to explore out there, so it never gets old to them! I thought this photo of Chris and the kids was so cute with his grandma following behind.

Brenson is in a stage where he mimicks constantly. He was adorable sitting on the porch next to Grandpa!

This also happened to be Chris's Dad's birthday, so Grandma invited him down for lunch. They live just over the hill on the same land. After lunch and a good visit, Chris and his Dad decided they wanted to take the kids fishing. Our kids had never been fishing before, and they loved the idea of it. This is the same pond that Chris spent many days fishing in as a kid, so it was something special that he really wanted to share with his kids, too.

Chris's Dad was cracking me up using Brianna's fishing pole! Hey, maybe pink is his color after all *grin*.

We thought that Brianna would get bored very quickly, but she didn't! She was having a blast!

The fish weren't really biting much, but she didn't care. She just loved being out there and using her pole.

Finally, we did catch a few little perch. Brianna actually reeled it in herself, and she was SO proud. Before she even caught a fish, she proclaimed that this was "the most fun" thing to do. After she caught the fish? Well, her excitement was through the roof!

I didn't know if she would be scared to touch it or what. But nope, our fearless girl was just fine holding and touching the fish.

Brenson, of course, wanted his turn with the fish, too. He really was busy exploring all around the pond (and I seriously thought he was going to fall in like 8 times), but as soon as Brianna reeled that fish in, he wanted in the middle of the action!

Bren really didn't want to let the fish go. Chris released it back into the water, but Bren was not happy about that.

They were fishing with live worms, and the kids were fascinated with those as well.

Being August in Oklahoma, is was certainly HOT this day. I was melting! There was no shade to speak of, and it was early afternoon. I had brought a few cups of water with us (water was in the Sonic cup) and was so thankful I did. Bren's little cheeks were so flushed, but he didn't seem to be bothered by the heat at all.

After catching one fish, Brianna couldn't wait to catch another. With as slow as the fish were biting, I wasn't sure if she would, but she waited patiently and eventually did.

They actually even caught one more . . . it was actually caught on Papa's pole, but he let Brianna and Brenson help reel it in.

Looking back at the photos of this afternoon makes me think of that country song, "She Thinks We're Just Fishin'". It's all about a little girl who goes fishing with her Daddy, and while she thinks the fishin' is so great, it's really about so much more than that. I'm so glad that my kiddos are getting these experiences with their grandparents, and especially in some of the places that are special to their family heritage. Someday, they may realize that it's not just about the fishin'.
