After both Brianna and Brenson were awarded top female and male runner of the year at their elementary school, one of the first things Brenson said was, "Am I going to get a trophy?" He knew that top runners typically received trophies, and he didn't want to miss out on that!
Their PE teacher, Mrs. S, and I had been corresponding, and she let me know that she would deliver their trophies as soon as they came in the mail. Unfortunately, when they came, Brenson's was broken. She apologized profusely for the delay and promised they would be in soon.
I wasn't worried at all about the trophies (I mean, this was about SO much more than that!), but Brenson would bring it up about once a week. Finally, this week Mrs. S messaged me and said the trophies were in! She asked to bring them by, and we made a plan.
The kids didn't know she was coming until right before she arrived, which made her visit a little extra fun. I could tell she was reluctant to come in, but we have been really careful about going in public and felt safe. She came in, presented Brenson and Brianna with their trophies, and even showed us the plaques that will hang in one of the main hallways at school that now have "Brianna Nelson" and "Brenson Nelson" on them.
Mrs. S is a very special person and teacher. We are so grateful for her!
We visited for a while, and then the kids decided to drag out every running medal they've ever received. I don't know why kids do things like this, but Mrs. S was so sweet to show interest and even took their photo with their loot.
The next day, this was posted to the school FB page:
I am so appreciative of the extra effort Mrs. S took to make this time special for my kiddos. One of the traits that makes her such a wonderful teacher is that she goes above and beyond in so many ways. Also, Bri and Bren worked really hard to log those miles. They ran when they didn't want to. They ran when they were tired. They ran when they were cold. They ran when they were hot. I love how they can see so clearly that their hard work, discipline, and perseverance paid off!
