Anniversary Book

In my last post, I wrote all about the anniversary party we threw for Mom and Dad's 50th wedding anniversary. One of the special things we did for them was create a memory book as a joint gift to them (from their kids and grandkids). I had initially thought I would do a "love board" and asked people to send me memories, funny stories, meaningful quotes, and well wishes for the board. However, I quickly realized that I had a larger response than I could fit on a "love board". I also thought about what a hassle it would be to store a "love board" as a keepsake and decided to change my idea to a memory book instead.

I had asked everyone in the family to send me something for the book and to help spread the word to anyone they thought might want to contribute. Like I said above, I had a great response. It was plenty to fill a book, for sure! It actually ended up being kind of overwhelming, so I called my sister and asked her to help me put the book together. We were able to get together one afternoon/evening and finish most of it in that time. We shared a similar vision for the book, and I think it came together well enough that it's difficult to tell which layouts I put together and which ones she created.

Because I wanted to have the book completed in time to give to Mom and Dad at their party, I had told everyone that I wouldn't be accepting entries for the book after the Tuesday before the party on Friday. However, the Williams and the Gorings both sent something after my deadline, and I just didn't feel like I could leave either of them out since they have been friends of Mom and Dad's for decades. Thankfully, on the Friday morning of the party, Mallory helped me put together a few additional pages to include the tributes that had come later than I wanted.

We tried to keep things fairly simple, but I still think it turned out really nice!

The front cover

The first page in the book was the dedication page.
It reads:

"Leaving a legacy is like tossing a rock into a pond. There's an initial splash followed by ripple effects that continue on once the rock has disappeared. You might have a small rock to throw or a big boulder, but each one of us will leave something behind us. It's up to us to decide how far those ripples will travel! As Christians, we take the idea of legacy seriously. We believe that everything we have are gifts from God, and we're called to manage it well. For Christians, leaving a legacy is about doing things God's way, for His purpose, to bless His people." ~ Dave Ramsey

As we celebrate this wonderful milestone of 50 years of marriage with you, we want to recognize and thank you for the legacy you are creating by the way you live your lives. Your influence is far reaching as you strive to live for the Lord and shine His light and love in your life. The notes in this book are just a very small reflection of that.

Happy 50th anniversary! We love you and are forever grateful for the blessing you are to us!

~ Your children and grandchildren

I'm certainly not going to write out what was written on each page, but I did want record of the dedication page.

The pages weren't in any sort of order because how do you rank or order people who have all played important roles in your life? We did try to group people together on the same page that were from the same season of life or the same location. We also tried to group family together.

Some tributes were long and got a page all to themselves!

The last page tells who put the book together and gives the date.

This project was one of those that kind of took on a life of its own once it got rolling. I had no idea what kind of response I would have - and while I was thrilled that so many people were sending me things - it was also pretty overwhelming. However, once Lisa and I started working on it, it came together easily and fairly quickly.

I'm so glad we did this for Mom and Dad because it is a beautiful representation of their life together. We had people from all seasons of their life send tributes to be included, even if they don't have much contact with them anymore. It made me realize how much of my parents' lives have been dedicated to serving others and growing others. It was inspiring to me to see how far reaching and lasting their influence has truly been.

The Twins' Baby Scrapbooks (yes, you read that right!)

Scrapbooking and papercrafting have long been something I love. I love working with my hands and creating something beautiful to look at, but most of all I love preserving memories and telling stories. I used to scrapbook every photo I took . . . I did this for about a decade. Then, as life began changing for me and my time was needed in other places, I had to reevaluate the best way for me to tell my story and preserve those memories.

That's about the time I began blogging.

Blogging is a much faster way for me to marry stories with photos, and capture those memories for myself and future generations. And, while blogging does satisfy my desire to tell my story, it does not give me the satisfaction of creating something with my hands the way papercrafting does. After Brianna was born, I gave up scrapbooking every day moments and every photo I took for creating books for specific reasons or special occasions. I made Brianna several little books when she was a baby, but my favorite one was her monthly photo book (you can see it here). Now that she's a "big" kid, she loves it, too!

I've made several books similar to Brianna's for special friends or family members when they've had babies. I remember being kind of hard on myself for not having Brianna's finished before she was born. Then, when Bren came along, it took me over six months to finish his book (you can see it here). I only thought my productivity was slow back then!!!

After the twins were born, I had great intentions to finish their books in a timely manner. I was also trying to complete a book for our friend, Sadie, who was born about a year and a half before the twins. However, between having two babies, a toddler, and a preschooler, losing grandparents, having a house built, moving, having two miscarriages, losing more grandparents, and just LIFE, things did not work out according to my best laid plans.

I did finally finish Sadie's little book around the time she was three years old. After that, I decided to create a book for Brooke, Brecklyn, and Sadie's little sister, Caroline, all at the same time. I thought doing three books together would help speed things up a bit.

While I was right that doing three books together was faster than making three individually, life continued to happen and things continued to get in the way of me completing the books. Now that I have a few hours of kid free time in the mornings, I was determined to GET. THEM. DONE.

AND I DID!!! HOORAY!!!

I used the same color-scheme and papers for all three books. Brooke and Brecklyn's books are very similar, while Caroline's is a bit different. I wrote all of the poems myself, and my girls love for me to read them their poem. I took these photos before I put the photos in my girls' books, but that is also done now! I'm only posting photos of Brooke and Brecklyn's books ;-).

Brooke's book:

Brooke's poem reads:
So many nights we spent, asking God to send us you.
A baby to love and cherish, so perfect, pink, and new.

We waited as we prayed, and dreamed of you our child.
We imagined your kind heart, your spirit, and your smile.

And then God sent us you, given in a perfect pair.
A double blessing to behold, a lifetime to love and share.

Our prayer for you, our child, is that you’ll always seek the Lord.
Letting your light shine for Him, bound by love’s strong cord.

May you always thrive and sparkle, knowing joy amidst the sorrows.
Rising in faith in the Lord, for He holds your tomorrows.

You, precious  love, are our dream-come-true.

Welcome to the world, it’s been waiting for you!

Brecklyn's book:

Brecklyn's poem reads:
Long before you were in our arms, you were in our dreams.
We prayed and pleaded with God for you, for so very long it seems.

We yearned for your sweet smile, your giggle, and your charms.
Nothing finer could we imagine, than to hold you in our arms.

And then God sent us you, given in a perfect pair.
A double blessing to behold, a lifetime to love and share.

Our prayer for you, sweet baby, is that you will know God’s love.
And place your hope in Him, setting your mind on things above.

May your little light shine brightly, as you sparkle and you grow.
May you love and thrive and prosper, and Jesus always show.

You, our cherished child, are our dream-come-true.
Welcome to the world, it’s been waiting for you!

I'm so glad these books are finally finished, and the girls have already enjoyed them so much. I wouldn't have imagined it would take me until they are 4 1/2 years old to get them done, but the important thing is that I finished them. That's what I'm going to keep telling myself anyway, haha!

Brenson's Monthly Photo Scrapbook

Before Brenson was born, I set several goals for myself to accomplish. One of those goals was to complete a small scrapbook for him (like the one I did for Brianna) so that after he was born all I would have to do was fill it with photos. Well, I did get a good portion of it finished, but it has sat incomplete since February. I've had great intentions to finish it up several times, but it had not worked out for one reason or another. This past week, I finally decided to get. it. done. No excuses!

It's such a good feeling to have a project completed! I don't have photos in the book yet, but that is for sure the easy part!

Here is the outside of the album:
I used the same color scheme for his book as I did in his room. This is exactly what I did with Brianna's book as well. I guess I have a hard time branching out, haha!

This is the cover page . . . the first page you see when you open the book (you can click on any of these to make them larger):

The little tags pull out of the pockets and Chris and I will eventually write on them for him.

The page with his stats and space for a newborn photo:

Each page after this has space for our favorite photo of Brenson from each month of his first year.

Doing boy layouts was a bit of a stretch at first. I've done several of these books as gifts, but all for girls!

This is one of my favorite layouts from the book!

On the left side of this layout is space for a family photo. On the right side is a poem I wrote for Bren. It's typed out at the bottom of this post so you can read it if you want.

This is the closing page of the book:

The poem I wrote reads as follows:

We have dreamed of you - a son,
A boy to call our own.
We have dreamed of you - a gift,
A blessing from heaven alone.
We have dreamed of you - a heart,
Meant to love, serve, aspire.
We have dreamed of you - a soul,
Seeking the Lord's will and desire.
We have dreamed of you - a spirit,
Unique, priceless, and strong.
We have dreamed of you - a brother,
A companion all along.
We have dreamed of you - a life,
Filled with fulfillment and with joy.
We have dreamed of you - our son.
Our pride. Our love. Our boy.
And now you're here - our dream,
Our prayer, our wish-come-true.
Welcome to the world,
It's been waiting for you!

You can read the poem I wrote for Brianna here. Please do not reprint or copy either one :-).
