Yesterday, Brooke and Brecklyn turned SEVEN years old. I know I say this every time I write about their birthdays, but they are growing up SO very fast and my momma heart can hardly handle it!
Their birthday fell on a Thursday this year. They were both excited that their birthday was on a school day because they wanted to share treats with their class and celebrate with their classmates. Last year - since they were homeschooled - they missed out on this fun aspect of celebrating their birthday, and they (Brecklyn, especially) were really looking forward to it this year.
However, early in the week the local meteorologists began forecasting a major sleet/ice/snow event for the 2nd and 3rd of February. I typically don't tell the kids if snow or winter weather is in the forecast, but this time I did let the girls know that it was likely they wouldn't be going to school on their birthday after all.
They went to school on Monday and Tuesday, then Tuesday afternoon we got the word that all local public schools would be distance learning on Wednesday and Thursday due to weather (and they got a snow day today - Friday). Brooke was excited that they would likely have snow on their birthday, but Brecklyn was pretty disappointed that she wouldn't be able to celebrate with her classmates.
Since Chris has been unemployed for several months, we have pretty much stopped eating out. I think we've been out twice in two months, which is a major change from before. When I asked the girls what they wanted for their birthday dinner, they were very emphatic that they wanted to eat at our local Mexican restaurant, El Azteca!
Chris and I agreed that we would make that happen, but we were concerned with the weather situation that we wouldn't be able to go on their actual birthday. Instead, we decided to go the Tuesday prior to their birthday (February 1st). The girls didn't mind this one bit! They were thrilled to go and even happier when Daddy let them have a special soda to drink with their meal!
They had both asked us if we were going to have the employees sing to them for their birthday, and of course we said YES! Brooke was super excited about this, but Brecklyn wasn't so sure. However, when it actually happened, they both enjoyed it! I think the sombreros were their favorite part . . . they kept them on for the remainder of our meal and while they ate their birthday sopapillas. Brooke said, "This hat is FANTASTIC!" Haha!

Along with eating at El Azteca, Brooke and Brecklyn had several other requests for their birthday. We had talked with all the kids ahead of time about how this birthday may look a bit different for them due to our financial/no job situation, and they were all great about it. They knew they would be receiving fewer gifts than in the past, we would eat breakfast at home instead of getting donuts or going out, and we would make their birthday dessert instead of buying it. None of them cared about these things . . . they were happy and excited to be celebrating, even it if looked a bit different!
Brecklyn and Brooke requested pumpkin muffins for their birthday breakfast!
Of course, I made sure the mantle and hearth were all decorated for the special day. We also still have personalized birthday dresses/shirts courtesy of my sister!

This year, I added this fun balloon arch to our decorations. The girls LOVED it!
We always have the kids open their birthday gifts right after breakfast so they can play with/use their new stuff all day. Brecklyn and Brooke were all about that!
Excited much? Haha!
Their "big" gifts were new Bibles and Bible cases.
I didn't mention this above, but we did end up getting a good round of winter weather. It sleeted for hours on Wednesday evening/night, then started snowing early Thursday morning. These birthday girls were thrilled to have some snow on their birthday!
The temperatures were very cold on Thursday morning, so the kids didn't go out to play in the snow until later in the afternoon when it had warmed up a bit. Instead, the twins and I made their birthday cupcakes and got the house smelling all yummy and cozy. They both love helping in the kitchen and are learning to be good little cooks.

Since we had a significant snow, the girls then decided we needed to make snow ice cream. Yum!

The whole crew enjoyed this special treat!
After more play time and some time out in the snow (of which I failed to take photos . . . ), we had meatloaf with mashed potatoes, gravy, cream corn, and salad for dinner. These girls can eat their weight in mashed potatoes! Then, it was time for cupcakes!
They loved the attention!

Time to blow the candles out!
Finally, they put on new pjs sent to them from Meme. I love it when the three girls match!
