After a week of fun and exploration, we woke up on Saturday, May 20th knowing it was time to hit the road and cover some serious ground towards home. We had spent the night in Augusta, Georgia, and had reservations in Southaven, Mississippi for that night. That meant we had close to nine hours driving time for the day.
From Augusta, we drove through Atlanta toward Alabama. We weren't sure what driving through Atlanta would be like, but we were thankful we were doing it on a Saturday morning and not a weekday morning. We did hit a major traffic slow-down that took a bit to work through, but overall it was fine.
By 10:45am, we had reached Alabama (after crossing the time zone line from Eastern to Central time). One state closer to our goal!
We loved the huge magnolia trees at the Alabama visitor's center.
Before we knew it, we were driving through Birmingham,
and eventually crossing into Mississippi!
Happy to be in Mississippi!
We took a little extra time to stretch our legs and bodies,
and enjoy the beautiful grounds of the visitor's center.
We arrived in Southaven right about 5:00pm, got settled into our hotel, then went to O'Charley's for dinner. We had never eaten there before, and there's just something about it that says "south" to me. The food was okay and the service was meh, but fortunately we were all too tired to really care anyhow.
The next morning (Sunday, May 21st), we worshipped with the Nesbit church of Christ in Nesbit, Mississippi. Rick and Mona Popejoy labor with the church in that location, and Mr. Rick had been the instructor for a few OABS classes Chris had recently taken. We had met them a time or two before, and they were pleased to have us visit. After worship, they took us out to a local restaurant for lunch.
We had a nice visit with the Popejoys before once again hitting the road. This time, though, the goal was to make it HOME!
It was about six hours of driving time from Nesbit to home, cutting across Arkansas on I-40. This is a drive we have made many times before, so I knew when I saw this view, we were getting close to Oklahoma!
We arrived at our house around 7:30pm. We appreciate every trip we are able to take, and discovering and exploring God's beautiful creation is one of our favorite things. However, it is always good to be HOME!
