Kid Room Makeovers!

Having a big family has been a dream of mine since I can remember. Even though our family honestly isn't as big as what I'd dreamed it would be (hello infertility and miscarriage), six people all living under one roof is still a house full. In our culture, with a house full of people typically comes a lot of stuff, and managing all the stuff is something I feel like I work at constantly.

With all my kids being born in February, birthday season comes just six weeks after Christmas. With four kids and two major "gifting" times back-to-back, the stuff can easily and quickly get out of control. Because of this, I'm often trying to think of ways to cut back on the giving of things and do experiences or large group gifts instead (such as the playhouse).

This year, we decided that for the kids' birthdays, we would redo their bedrooms instead of giving them tangible gifts. The paint on our walls is a builder's grade paint and doesn't clean or wear well. The first thing we wanted to do was put high quality, easy-to-clean paint on all the kids' bedroom walls. We started with the twins' room.

The ceilings in our house are the same color as the walls. In both the twins' room and in Brianna's room, we decided to paint the ceiling white because we changed the wall color.

Chris finished the ceiling in the twins' room on a Friday evening. The next day, he got to work painting their walls. Of course, he had helpers :-).

Brooke wanted to be right by Daddy's side the entire time he was trying to work.

Chris completely finished all the painting in the twins' room on Saturday afternoon.

I love how it turned out! It's amazing how much a white ceiling brightened the room!

After finishing the twins' room, he quickly got to work painting the ceiling in Brianna's room.

Chris really worked hard to get the painting completed in a timely manner. He put the first coat of paint on Brianna's walls on Saturday evening, then finished with the second coat on Sunday afternoon. Her room is also so much brighter!

The next weekend, we got started in Brenson's room. We decided not to paint his ceiling because we repainted his walls the same color. Also, he has crown molding in his room so if we painted the ceiling white I felt like it would really take away from the crown molding. Even though it is the same color, we used a much higher quality paint for his walls.

We finished the first coat on his walls on Friday night, then put the second coat on them on Saturday morning. While we were waiting for his walls to dry, we put decals on one of Brianna's walls and finished decorating her room.

Once the walls were dry in Bren's room, we got them all taped to paint stripes on one wall.

We ended up working until a little after midnight on Saturday to finish the stripes. They weren't difficult, but the work was a little tedious.

However, we LOVE the way the wall turned out. I'm so thankful we tried something new and attempted the stripes!

I was really surprised we were able to finish all the painting in just two weekends. Sometimes making good progress is difficult with four kids underfoot, especially when we changed paint colors so many times! In my next post, I'll do before and after photos of each room. For the twins, we painted the ceiling and walls, and put up just a few new little things on their walls. We didn't change a lot in there, though. For Brenson's room, he got new paint, a new rug, lamp, bedding, and we changed up a few of his decor pieces. Brianna's room was the biggest change with new paint, new curtain, rug, bedding, and lot of new decor. We also rearranged her room, so it feels like a totally different space. I'm excited to share photos of how the rooms turned out!
