January Round-Up!

The first month of 2020 has officially ended, and that means it's time for my monthly round-up post. When I first started writing these posts, I kind of dreaded them. However, now they are some my favorite posts to not only write but to read as well! Here's a glimpse at what we had going on this month:

If you know me well at all, you know that one thing that's valued in our house is reading. I have read to all of our children since before they were born, and it's a simple yet cherished time for us. It makes me so happy when I see them reading on their own and choosing books over other activities. Brooke and Brecklyn, especially, enjoy our book nook!

Each year, the kids' elementary school teams up with RSU (the local university) and allows school families free admission to a basketball game. We haven't been able to go to this in a year or two, so we decided to make it happen this year. We all enjoyed this outing!

On Fridays, Grampy and G-Jo pick the big kids up from school and spend the afternoon with them. One afternoon, they made a big batch of strawberry jam (known as slurp in our family).

Brenson got a haircut, then lost a tooth all in one afternoon. He's been kind of slow to lose teeth, so this is still an exciting event to him!

Oftentimes the kids are bursting with things to talk to Daddy about as soon as he gets home from work. It's so cute to listen to all the things that stand out to them about our day. Brecklyn is the quietest of all the kids, so sometimes she doesn't get much talk time. One evening, however, she was determined to have her turn to talk to Daddy!

I've always enjoyed doing puzzles, and Brenson and Brecklyn are my two puzzlers. Brecklyn loves to sit at the table and work puzzles (with her lipstick not far from her hand :-).

In our first experience with organized team sports, Brenson began playing on a basketball team a few months ago. Up until this month, they had only practiced together. They've had games almost every Saturday during January and will have games throughout February, as well. It's been so fun to watch him play, and quite amazing to watch his team (the Jayhawks) improve with every game. Brenson chose 5 as his number because that was one of the numbers Chris wore as a kid.

Since Christmas, I've been working more consistently with the twins on learning sight words. They are both very interested in reading, although Brecklyn a little more so than Brooke. I often walk into the room to find them helping each other practice their sight words . . . perk of having a twin!

Mrs. S, the PE teacher at the kids' school, issued a challenge to all her students to do exercises at home each day throughout the month of January. All my kiddos have been diligent to complete the exercises, and even have ME doing them, too! These pictures were shared on the school FB page :-).

It's been some years since I've gotten new glasses, so I finally invested in some this month. I sent Chris this photo to show him how my new frames look on me!

Brooke has always been somewhat prone to getting eye infections. She's had enough that I recognize them as soon as they are starting and can begin treatment. A few weeks ago I noticed that she was getting one. Chris asked me to send him a photo, and this was the best I could do, haha!

We've been waiting and waiting for snow this winter, but so far haven't had anything to speak of. I've a had little unit of books and activities just waiting for a snow day, but decided to use it when the twins were having a sick day instead.

Working on learning sight words

I raided our personal library for snow themed books and found several good ones!

Thankfully, the twins weren't too sick or sick for too long. They were ready to go back to school after a couple days at home with cute hairdos courtesy of Brianna!

Our friend, Maci, from church had a birthday in January, and invited us to her painting party. Bren wasn't interested in going, but all the girls were there for it. It was held at a local art studio and was a ton of fun!

Everyone painted llamas . . . I loved seeing how similar and different everyone's paintings were!

Brooke Ellie has often received comments regarding her unique eye color. It's not quite brown or hazel or green or gray, but a combination of all those colors. One Sunday after church services, we went to eat and I realized that Brooke's eye color is very similar to Lisa's!

The end of January means birthday month is right around the corner! I got the twins' gifts wrapped and the mantle all decorated for birthday season just a few days ago . . . whooo-hooo!

And finally, sometimes everyone needs snuggles and loves at the same time. I remember when they all fit on my lap fairly easily . . . those days are gone but I still love them all piling on me for some hugs 💗.

Good-bye January . . . Hello February!
