I'm pretty sure I've already mentioned this on here a few times before, but this summer the kids all participated in a summer running program through their running team, The Falcons. Coach Renee offers this summer program as a conditioning plan to help the kids stay in shape for the cross country season in the fall.
Brianna and Brenson first joined the Falcons back in August of 2020, and were able to participate in both the cross country and track and field seasons. However, Brooke and Brecklyn weren't old enough to be on those teams (Coach Renee wants the kids to be in first grade or six years old to participate), although they did take part in a race back in the spring. We asked Coach about them participating in the summer run program (called the I Run Summer Endurance Club), and she said that would be fine. They were so excited to be able to join in on the running fun!
The running club met for an hour, three times a week (M-W-F), for 10 weeks this summer. Each elementary student had a goal of running a total of 100 miles in those 10 weeks, and it broke down as 3 miles on Monday, 1 mile on Tuesday, 2 miles on Wednesday, 1 mile on Thursday, and 3 miles on Friday. On Tuesday and Thursday, the kids were responsible for running on their own.
At the end of the 10 weeks, Coach Renee hosted a Saturday morning 1/2 mile race.
Brooke during the race
Brecklyn coming into the finish line
Brenson racing
Bri running in the race (love the hair!)
Bri and Gavon watching the older teammates in their race
Coach Renee had the kids broken up into three age groups. Brecklyn came in first and Brooke came in second for their age group!
Brianna came in third with a solid time for her!
In the boys' race, Brenson came in second for his age group!
It wasn't always easy, but ALL FOUR kids met their 100 mile goal! We would go to the track at Catalayah on most Tuesdays and Thursdays to complete the 1 mile requirement for those days, and sometimes we had to make up for miles missed at other times during the week (like when we went to Iowa for a few days or when Bri and Bren were at camp). There were even tears a time or two, but I was so proud of them all for persevering and reaching their goals!
We are really grateful to have found such a great running team, and for the opportunities the kids have had to grow as runners through the program. I say often, though, that running is as much about growing in perseverance, discipline, and diligence as it is about growing physically. I'm so happy to be able to grow alongside my kiddos in these areas!
