Track & Field season number five with the Owasso Falcons is in the books, and with four kids participating in three different age groups, it was definitely a busy one!
Coach Renee was hopeful that we would be back at the Owasso track this year for practice, but sadly that did not happen. The track renovations weren't quite complete at the beginning of the season (which began in late January), and she was unable to get permission for us to practice there after it opened again. So frustrating because she was told that us practicing there wouldn't be a problem! Instead, we practiced at Heart Healthy Trail in Owasso (same place as last year), and that worked out ok. The high school group (which included Bri who is in 9th grade) and junior high group (which included Bren who is in 7th grade) practiced M-W-F from 7:00-8:30am, while the elementary group (including Brooke and Brecklyn who are in 4th grade) practiced M-W-F from 8:30-9:30am. Chris was the field coach, and Brianna was a junior coach for the elementary kids.

High school and junior high began their practices at the end of January when the weather was still very cold and windy. I'm not sure it bothered them too much, though. They were mostly all happy to be back at it!

Elementary began their practices the first week of February . . . on Brooke and Brecklyn's birthday. The older kids are such good helpers with the younger ones!

On most practice mornings, Chris, Bri, and Bren would go to practice at 7:00am, and I would come at 8:30am with Brooke and Brecklyn. Once the HS/JH practice was over, Chris and Bren would go home. I would walk with Tia during practice, then drive our girls plus Gavon and sometimes Jaxen home after elementary practice ended.
In addition to morning practices, we also had Saturday morning practices at the track in Collinsville. These practices were mostly for those who wanted to practice hurdles and long jump, although Chris would also work with the throwers at this time.
Saturday morning practice with the ducks!
After Spring Break (once Daylight Savings Time ended and we had more light in the evenings), we also began Tuesday evening practices at the Claremore track. Again, these practices were mostly for those running hurdles and doing long jump, although Chris would almost always take our kids early to get some throwing practice in, as well. He would also typically take our kids for throwing practice on Sunday evening as none of them did much throwing practice during actual practice (we preferred they work on running during that time). It often felt like a lot, but it paid off in their PRs!
Brenson also participated in a three day throwing clinic in the middle of March (during public school spring break). This was a bit pricey as far as we were concerned, but we saw big improvements in Bren's throwing! Chris was also able to improve his coaching after the clinic, so we were grateful they had the opportunity to attend.

Our first meet of the season was a junior high meet at Caney Valley on March 11th. At this meet, Bren ran in a 4x200m relay,
ran the 400m,
competed in shot put,
and threw discus.
We were thrilled that he brought home medals in his three individual events!
Brianna did not compete, but rather she enjoyed social time with her team.

In addition to bringing home some hardware, Bren set two new teams records at Caney Valley,
and three new PRs!
The Falcons represented well!
Meet number two for the season was a high school meet in Glenpool on March 14th. It ended up being kind of a disaster as it was ridiculously windy that day (wind gusts up to 60 mph).
It wasn't too bad when we first got there. In fact, the sky was pretty breathtaking.
However, the wind picked up quickly and was miserable for the rest of the day. At this meet, Bri threw discus (didn't make the qual line . . . most didn't because they were throwing into the wind),
Then, we waited and waited and waited for her to run the 1600m.

Bri wasn't happy with her 800m time, then we waited for hours for her to run the 1600m only to have her MISS it. The wind had knocked the power out (so no announcing of events), and the directors of the meet decided to eliminate all hurdle events for safety and go straight to the mile. Coach Renee was not aware of the change, and Bri flat missed the race. Most of the girls running were taken by surprise and not warmed up or even wearing spikes. It was craziness.
We left immediately following that debacle, and Bri was mad mad on the way home.
The wind was severe enough that I think the meet should have been canceled, but that's not what happened. Ah well . . . good opportunity for life lessons here. Sigh.
The next meet took us to Porter for a 5th and 6th grade meet that Brooke and Brecklyn competed in.
At this meet, Brooke threw discus,
competed in shot put,
ran in a 4x200m relay, and ran a 1600m.
Brecklyn also ran in a 4x200m relay, ran a 400m,
and competed in long jump.
They didn't bring any medals home, but they competed well for only being 4th graders. It was good experience, and Brecklyn had a great nap on the way home :-).

On March 27th, we had our first big meet, which was in Oologah. Brianna and Brenson both competed in this one. Brenson threw discus,
ran the 400m,
competed in 110m hurdles,
and then immediately had to run to the field to throw shot put. He looked at me and said, "I don't know how I'm going to do this" because he was on dead legs, but he got the job done (and still won 2nd place)!
Meanwhile, Brianna threw discus and raced the 800m.
Then, she waited,
and waited,
and waited for the 1600m.
I had shared with another mom that I distinctly remember the sun setting last year during the 1600m races, and that's exactly what happened again this year!

Brianna and Bren as we were {finally} leaving for the day!
Brenson brought home another three medals (came in fourth in his other event), as well as three PRs and two team records from the Oologah meet. Pretty good day!
April started off just the way March had ended - with a track meet on April 1st in Wagoner. This was a HS only meet, and Brianna started the day by doing Kyrie's hair :-).
Then, she competed in discus, raced the 800m, and ran the 1600m. She wasn't thrilled with her times, but we kept reminding her that she is coming back from an injury.
The next week we went to Skiatook for one of our favorite meets of the season. Both Bri and Bren competed.
Brianna threw discus,
and ran the 800m and the 1600m.
Bren threw shot, discus, ran the 110m hurdles, and raced the 200m.
And of course, they spent time with their teammates!
Bri was thrilled to finally come home with a PR in the 800m! Yay!
And Bren collected four new PRs, three team records, and three medals!
Just two days later - on April 12th - we were off to Guthrie for Brenson, Brooke, and Brecklyn to compete in a 12U and under meet.
Brooke threw shot put,
competed in discus, and ran the 800m.
Brecklyn competed in long jump,
ran the 800m, and was part of a relay medley.
Second place in the relay medley for the 10U girls!
Brenson threw discus, shot, competed in long jump, and raced the 400m.
They all came home with their fair share of ribbons!
Competing is definitely fun for the younger kids, but the best part of the meet might just be the Oreo relay at the end. Chris was on a team with Harvey, Brenson, and Ross. They tried really hard to lose in the last stretch to one of the Arrows teams!
However, they were victorious and won the Oreo trophy!
Winning team! The older members may have also won some injuries. Ahem.
On April 17th, we went to Catoosa for a JH/HS meet. Brianna threw discus, ran the 800m, and ran the 1600m at this meet.
Brenson threw discus, competed in shot put, raced the 100m hurdles, and ran the 400m.
Bren was happy to see his buddy, Julian, at this meet! They always enjoy throwing together.
Jaxen and Bri
And Bri loved seeing her friend, Tessa. Even if she is a little crazy, haha!
Bri, Tessa, and Coach Rose
Finally, our last regular meet of the season was on April 24th (for JH) and April 25th (for HS) in Collinsville. Brianna threw discus, ran the 800m, and ran the 1600m at Collinsville. We were thrilled as she set a PR in both the 800m and the 1600m!
Brenson threw discus and shot put, competed in 110m hurdles, and ran the 200m at Collinsville. This was the first meet where he didn't win first place in discus, but he still came away with a PR and 3rd place.

Whew! It feels good to be finished with the regular season! Even though we all really enjoyed it, it was A LOT of track & field between practices and meets! I'm just so grateful we are part of a great team with a solid coach and low drama between teammates. I try to not take for granted how blessed we are. Now, we have Homeschool Track & Field Nationals to look forward to!
