Falcons Track & Field, 2023

Another Track & Field season with the Owasso Falcons is in the books. This was Brianna and Brenson's third season with the Falcons, and the team continues to be a big blessing in our lives!

The team - which included HS, JH, and elementary - was a bit smaller this year compared to last year, but it truly seemed like addition by subtraction. We had a great group of kids!

Because Brianna is in 7th grade this year, she is part of the junior high team and practiced earlier than Brenson on the elementary team. Our friend and neighbor, Abi, was also on the team again this year, so we carpooled with them which was great. Chris also helped coach throwers and high jumpers again this year and needed to be at the earlier practice. Practices were M-W-F from 7:00-8:30am for JH and HS, and M-W-F from 8:30-9:30am for elementary. All morning practices were held at the Owasso HS Track. We also practiced some on Tuesday evenings at the Claremore HS Track, specifically for hurdlers and high jumpers. Typically, Chris and Brianna would leave our house at 6:30am, pick up Abi, and go to practice. I would get up and get the twins to school at 7:30am, then around 8:00am Brenson would be picked up by an adult member of the Brown family to go to practice (along with Jalaam, Abi's younger brother, who was also running elementary). I would then leave our house at 9:00am (just as Chris was returning home after HS/JH practice) to pick up Brianna (who stayed to help with elementary) and Brenson and bring them home to begin our homeschool day. It was a lot of business, but worked out well!

Of course, Brianna loves to run, but socializing at practice comes in at a very close second!

Brianna had her first meet of the season on March 7th at Caney Valley. This was her first junior high meet, and it was a very cold and windy day!

Abi, Bri, and Kyrie

Since we were in Ramona, Ashlyn and Kristin came to cheer Bri on!

At this meet, Brianna participated in a 4 x 800m relay,

threw shot put,

and ran the 800m and 1600m. During the 1600m, the skies opened up and poured the coldest rain. Thankfully, most runners were on their last lap when it happened so they just finished the race! As tough as the weather was this day, we celebrated big when Bri ran her 1600m in 7:44 . . . going sub 8:00 for the first time!

Our second meet was on March 22nd in Tahlequah. This was a 5th and 6th grade meet, so only Brenson competed from our family. He threw shot,

threw discus,

and competed in high jump.

He also saw a friend he had played basketball with and hung around with him for part of the day. After the meet, we quickly went to visit my friend, Lena, that I worked with in college. The kids have met her before, but not in some years. It was a wonderful visit, and I'm so glad we stopped in to say hi!

She posted this on FB later that day:

On April 1st, we hosted our first home meet for elementary at Rejoice Christian School in Owasso. Once again, Brenson was the only one competing from our family in this meet. He threw shot,

threw discus,

competed in long jump,

and participated in a 4 x 400m relay. It was an exciting race, and our boys won!

First place relay team - Allen, Brenson, Caden, and Cade

Bren was very happy with multiple first place wins this day!

Chris started all the races at the meet, and Brianna helped corral the athletes. Chloe was there to cheer us on,

as well as the cutest cheering section of Sadie, Caroline, Brecklyn, and Brooke. The weather was beautiful, although a bit on the chilly side earlier in the morning.

April 3rd brought our first "big" meet at Oologah. This was a JH/HS meet that had been rescheduled from earlier in the season. It definitely had a different vibe from the smaller meets we are used to, but we had a great time!

Brianna threw shot,

discus,

and ran the 200m and 400m at this meet. She was originally going to run the 800m, but somehow both we and Coach missed the call for it. Coach decided to have her run the 400m instead.

Because this meet is bigger and for both junior high and high school, we didn't leave until after 5:00pm. I wasn't really expecting that! However, I was thankful for lovely weather and a good day of competition.

Love cheering my girl on!

Brenson came to hang out with us all day.

Brianna, Kyrie, and Serenity

April 10th brought us to Skiatook for another JH/HS meet. At this meet, Brianna threw discus,

participated in a 4 x 800 relay (where they won second!),

Yay for a running medal!

threw shot, and ran the 1600m. We are learning that Bri definitely prefers those distance races to sprints.

Brianna competed in a meet at Wagoner on April 17th. She threw discus (and scratched all three throws), threw shot put (didn't make the qualifying line), and ran the 1600m. Thankfully, she set a season PR in the 1600m that day since throwing was a bust!

Finally, on April 22nd, we had our last regular season meet in Guthrie. It was an elementary meet, but they designated the athletes based up age instead of grade. This meant that Brianna competed as a 12U and Brenson competed as a 10U. This is how it will be at Homeschool Track & Field Nationals.

Brianna competed in discus and shot put, and Brenson competed in discus, shot put, and long jump. I took this photo below of them with their ribbons after we got home that afternoon, and this is when we realized that Bren is officially taller than his big sister!
